ALETHEIA Safety Intelligence API — Terms of Use

1. Service Description

ALETHEIA provides chemical safety intelligence data via API. Data is compiled from public regulatory sources (IARC, EPA, EFSA, ECHA, NTP, CalEPA) and processed through automated multi-source synthesis. ALETHEIA is an informational tool, not a substitute for professional toxicological assessment.

The service is operated by Holistic Quality LLC ("we", "us", "our"). By accessing the API, you ("you", "your") agree to these terms.

2. Acceptable Use

You may use the API to build applications, conduct research, or inform product safety decisions. You may not:

• Resell raw API data without transformation or added value
• Use data to make automated safety decisions without human review
• Misrepresent ALETHEIA data as your own original research
• Exceed your subscription tier's rate limits via circumvention (multiple accounts, rotating IPs, proxy chaining)
• Attempt to reverse-engineer the synthesis engine or scoring methodology
• Use the API for purposes that violate applicable law

3. Data Accuracy & Disclaimer

Data is provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind, express or implied. While we strive for accuracy and cite primary regulatory sources, ALETHEIA does not guarantee completeness, correctness, or timeliness. Risk synthesis reflects automated multi-source aggregation and may not capture the latest regulatory changes.

Users should verify critical safety decisions against primary sources. Source citations and regulatory body references are included in API responses for this purpose.

4. Rate Limits & Fair Use

Each subscription tier has daily request limits:

• Free: 500 requests/day
• Developer ($29/mo): 10,000 requests/day
• Pro ($99/mo): 100,000 requests/day
• Enterprise: Custom limits

Systematic circumvention of rate limits will result in account termination. Batch endpoints count as one request per API call regardless of item count. Usage warnings are sent at 80% and 95% of your daily quota via X-Usage-Warning response headers.

5. API Keys & Security

You are responsible for securing your API key. You must:

• Store keys in environment variables or secure vaults, never in client-side code or public repositories
• Rotate compromised keys immediately via the dashboard or POST /api/keys/rotate
• Use HTTPS for all API requests (HTTP is rejected)

We reserve the right to deactivate keys that appear compromised, are used for abuse, or violate these terms.

6. Data Retention & Privacy

See our Privacy Policy for full GDPR Art. 13 details. In summary:

• We log request metadata (timestamps, endpoints, anonymized IPs) for rate limiting and abuse prevention
• We do not log request bodies or query parameters
• IP addresses are truncated to /24 subnets in storage
• Right-to-erasure is available via POST /api/keys/erasure (two-step email verification)
• Data Processing Agreement status is documented at /api/compliance

7. Intellectual Property

The compiled database structure, synthesis engine, risk scoring methodology, and API design are proprietary to Holistic Quality LLC. Underlying regulatory data (IARC monographs, EPA IRIS assessments, EFSA opinions, etc.) belongs to their respective agencies and is used under applicable public access provisions.

API responses include source attribution. You must preserve these attributions when displaying data to end users.

8. Termination

We may suspend or terminate access for:

• Violation of these Terms
• Abusive usage patterns
• Non-payment (paid tiers)
• Extended inactivity (keys unused for 12+ months)

You may cancel at any time via the dashboard or Stripe customer portal. On cancellation, API keys are deactivated and personal data is retained per our privacy policy retention schedule.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Holistic Quality LLC's total aggregate liability for any claims arising from your use of the API is limited to the total fees paid by you in the 12 months preceding the claim, or $100, whichever is greater.

We are not liable for:

• Decisions made based on API data
• Service interruptions, downtime, or data loss
• Indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages
• Loss of profits, data, or business opportunities

10. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms. Material changes will be communicated with 30 days' notice via:

• Email to registered API key holders
• The API changelog (GET /api/changelog)
• A version increment on this page

Continued use of the API after the notice period constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

11. Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Ohio, United States, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of Ohio.
